This video talks about some basic South Indian spices and their benefits.
Fenugreek Seeds/Methi/Menthulu
Fenugreek seeds are small in size and brown in color. They are rich in vitamins and minerals. Fenugreek seeds are a good remedy for diabetes by controlling blood sugar levels. They improve milk production in nursing mothers.

Mustard Seeds/Rye/Aavalu
Black mustard seeds are small round shape and black in color. They are rich source of omega 3 fatty acids. Mustard seeds contain calcium,  zinc, manganese, selenium and iron. They give relief from migraines.

Cumin Seeds/Jeera/Jeela karra
Cumin seeds are very good remedy for respiratory problems and common colds. They are good for digestion.
Turmeric Powder/Haldi/Pasupu
The bright yellow color powder comes from the turmeric root. It gives natural color for the food. It can also be used as a fabric dye. It has anti oxidant, anti bacterial, anti inflammatory and anti tumor properties.

Red Chili Powder/Lal Mirch Powder/Erra Karam
It gives hot and spiciness to the dish that you make. Red chilies are high in Vitamin C. One of the chiropractors that I know says that he mixes the red chili powder in a glass of water and drinks in the flu season. The spiciness of the red chili powder can open the sinuses. There is another kind of chili powder called Kashmiri red chili powder. It gives extra redness to the foods but it is not very spicy hot. You can see some red chilies also here that I use in my cooking. They come in different sizes. Small ones are hotter than the bigger ones. When you crush the red chiles in the food processor you will get crushed red chilies which is a convenient way to use in the seasoning or tempering ( you can watch my video how to do it).
Asafoetida/Hing/Inguva
Asafoetida is also a spice with a unique aroma. It aids the digestion. You only add a pinch of it to get the flavor. A pinch goes a long way.
Curry leaves/Curry Patta/Karivepaku
Curry leaves are very aromatic that comes from a tree. They have a lot of importance in Indian cooking.
