Oats and Potato Patties

1/4/2015

Oats and potato patties are spicy and delicious evening snack or an appetizer. Serve them hot with any chutney or homemade sauce. They are good for a rainy or snowy evening. Enjoy them.

Ingredients
3 medium size potatoes
1/2 cup whole grain oats
1-2 tbsp of wheat flour
2 tbsp finely chopped onions
1 tsp cumin seeds
2-4 green chilies
1 inch piece of ginger
some cilantro
a few curry leaves
salt to taste
oil for deep fry

Preparation
Boil and peel potatoes. After peeling grate them with bigger holes of your cheese grater.
To the grated potato add oats and mix them well. Keep this aside for 5-10 minutes and let the oats absorb the moisture from potatoes.
Make a paste with green chili, ginger and cilantro (coriander leaves).

Procedure
After 10 minutes to the potato  oats mixture, add ginger, green chili and cilantro paste and salt. Mix it well and add some wheat flour for binding the dough. Mix everything well but do not knead as the patties will come out hard. Make the dough into lemon size balls.

Frying
Heat some oil in a skillet on medium heat. Apply some oil to a plastic bag like a ziplock or sandwich bag. Take a ball and press it like a patty on the plastic bag. Press the edges carefully so that it won't come apart when you put in the oil.  When the oil is hot drop the patty carefully in the hot oil. repeat the same with other balls.  Do not overcrowd the oil as you need some space to turn them around. Fry them until golden brown on both sides. Drain the excess oil and take them out on to a paper napkin with a slotted spoon. Fry the same way the remaining. Serve them hot with home made sauce or any chutney.
