Pulagam is an Indian traditional dish made with rice and toor dal. We make this on festival days to offer (Naivedyam) Goddess Lakshmi.
1 cup of whole grain brown rice
1/2 cup of toor dal/Kadvndi pappu/pigeon peas/Red gram lentils
1 tsp ghee
2&1/2 cups of water. Use more water if you want more soft rice.
Wash rice and dal together.
Put a small sauce pan on medium heat. Add ghee to the pan. Fry the washed rice and dal in ghee for 2 minutes. Then take these into your cooker vessel and add water. Add a little turmeric powder and salt for your taste. Turn on the electric cooker and cook until it is done. Once it is done it will turn off automatically. Add 1 tsp of ghee to pulagam and mix it gently. You can serve this hot with any raita, chutney or pickle.
Pulagam is made in different ways in different regions. This is a basic recipe. You may also make it with moong dal instead of toor dal.
Whole grain brown rice will provide you with essential Vitamin B, Vitamin E, fiber and selenium. Toor dal is a good source of protein and fiber.
