Tomato Bath-Tomoto Upma-South Indian Breakfast

10/6/2014

Tomato bath is a simple South Indian breakfast recipe.
Ingredients
1 cup sooji rava/semolina
3 tomatoes
4 or more green chiles
1 inch piece of ginger
1 medium size onion
1/4 cup green peas
1&1/2 -2 tbsp oil
2 tbsp ghee
1 tbsp chana dal
1 tbsp urad dal
1 tsp mustard seeds
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp coriander cumin powder
a handful of cilantro /coriander leaves
salt to taste
1 tbsp flax seed powder(optional)
Preparation
Make a puree/juice with all 3 tomatoes. Measure the juice to get 3 cups. If it is less than 3 cups add water to make 3 cups and keep it aside. For 1 cup of upma rava/sooji we need 3 cups of water. Here we are replacing water with tomato juice.
Cut onion into small pieces.
Cut green chili lengthwise.
Chop ginger into small pieces.
Chop cilantro finely.

Procedure
Dry roast sooji/semolina until nice aroma comes out on medium flame. Do not let it change color. Then transfer it into another bowl. Fry cashews in the same pan with a little bit of ghee or oil. Take them out.
In the same pan heat some oil. When the oil is hot add chana dal, urad dal, mustard seeds, ginger and green chili. Add onion and green peas when mustard seeds are popping and chana dal is changing light brown color. Saute them until onion gets soft and green peas leave the raw smell. Then add tomato puree/juice and give a stir. Add salt, turmeric powder and coriander and cumin powder. Give a stir and let it come to a boil.
When the tomato juice comes to a boil add upma rava/sooji slowly while stirring. Bring the flame to low. Add ghee or extra virgin coconut oil Mix everything well without any lumps. Add 1 tbsp of flax seed powder to make it more nutritious. This is absolutely optional. I am sharing this idea with mothers who wants their children to eat nutritional food. Mix in cilantro /coriander leaves and cashews. Serve it hot with chutney.
