Tomato dal is an easy, delicious, Indian side dish that goes with rice.
Ingredients
1 cup Toor dal (Kandi Pappu)
3 Tomatoes
4-5 Green chilies
Cilantro or Coriander leaves
1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
1/2 tsp Red chili powder.
1 tsp Tamarind Paste.
For Tempering
1 tbsp Ghee
1 tbsp Oil
1/8 tsp Fenugreek seeds(optional)
1 tsp Mustard seeds
1 tsp Cumin seeds
3 Red Chilies
A big pinch of Hing(Asafoetida)
A few Curry leaves
Preparation
Cook Toor dal in the pressure cooker or on stove top.
Cut tomatoes into small cubes.
Cut green chili length wise.
Cut red chili also into small pieces.
Cut Cilantro or Coriander leaves finely.
Chop garlic into small pieces.

Procedure
Place a thick bottom vessel or pan on the stove top.
Take 1 tbsp Ghee and 1 tbsp oil in the vessel and let it heat up on medium flame.
When the oil is hot add garlic and fry until golden color.
Take the garlic out into a plate and keep it aside.
Now into the same oil add Fenugreek seeds followed by Mustard and Cumin seeds.
When the mustard seeds are spluttering, add Red chili.
When the red chili started changing color add Hing(asafoetida) and Curry leaves.
Then add the cut Tomato.
Give a stir and add Turmeric powder, Salt, Red chili powder and give a stir one more time and add half a cup of water.
Cover it and cook on medium for 3-5 minutes until the Tomatoes are soft.
After 5 minutes open the lid and add the cooked dal and garlic and give a stir.
Add Tamarind paste and add some more water for your desired consistency.
Cover it and cook for 5-10 minutes on low flame.
After 5-10 minutes open the lid give a stir and adjust the salt.
Add Cilantro or Coriander leaves and give a stir.
As a final step add 1/4 tsp of Ghee just on the top of the dal and cover for 5 minutes.
This step is optional but the dal gets the nice aroma from ghee and tastes delicious.

After 5 minutes serve Tomato dal with Whole grain Brown rice along with a Papad.
